« Still, Pretty Good Year: Part IV. ALCS | Main | Red Sox: Hell no, we won't go »

March 19, 2008

I bring a different perspective here as I'd always rooted for, though was also constanly annoyed by (except in April, late September, and October), JD Drew. I hoped for his success as much as ever (he'd hit a bases-loaded, 2-out, 2-run single in the ALDS), and just felt intensely joyful in watching it happen. But I did keep waiting for the ball to fall into Sizemore's glove. The giddy joy of the crowd (I've almost never heard them louder on a TV) and the sense of redemption is my favorite moment of the postseason. I watch it and get chills.

Also, Drew's face is totally intense up close during the short fist pump and the high-fives with teammates afterward.

As a counterexample to my continued fondness for Drew, I could never get into Lugo. A singles hitter with no plate discipline who gets picked off far too often, even as he steals bases. At least Drew walked all the time.

Also...no fawning over Schilling's very good outing? How...non-Beth of you. ;)

Good stuff. Thanks for these posts.

"I feel like we the fans were among those who got our comeuppance with that improbable Granny."

You know why your observations about the Drew grand slam are good writing? Because you put a spin on it that hadn't occurred to me before. And yet, as soon as I read them, I felt some kind of weird subconscious recognition of the truth there.
