From now on, whenever they announce Josh Beckett on TV and show his stats, there's going to be that maddening "and one" after "nine" in the won-lost column.
I didn't see the game--haven't seen any games this week, as a matter of fact--since I'm traveling on business and out here, it's like the Red Sox don't even exist. I haven't even been able to catch any highlights on ESPN. Instead, I've been relying on text message updates from my dad and the text-messaging service I signed up for that sends me the scores.
Curt's game the other night and Beckett's game last night have been described to me by witnesses, who assured me that both just happened not to have it in these ignominious losses, and that it wasn't Curt's 40-year-old body springing a leak or Beckett's leprosy rearing its ugly head. I guess I'll believe them for now. Someone I work with who's a Yankees fan just called and said something about the AL East standings, but I haven't even checked to see what they are. I've had enough stress this week.
So, from afar, and vaguely, I am worried. After the way the Sox started off the season, we should be feasting on the National League, especially on the Colorado Rockies for Chrissakes. Even the MFY apparently have been doing that.
If you're superstitious, I guess you could look to last year, when we did pwn the National League and then choked on a big one for the rest of the season as an indication that maybe this season will go the opposite way (it would be a convenient rationalization for the Yankees' recent success as well).
If you're really superstitious, like I am, you might believe that them losing inexplicably while you're not there to see the games, and the fact that they have been winning consistently while you've been watching consistently, mean something. If you fall into this category, here's the bad news: I won't be back in town till next Friday. No Barry Zito or DAVE ROBERTS for me, either.
But here's what I hope: I hope the Sox are chomping at the bit with the Giants coming in tonight. I hope DAVE ROBERTS gets the longest, loudest ovation in the history of Fenway Park. I hope that if Barry Bonds hits any home runs, Sox fans throw it back, even if they have to huck it over the Monster from Lansdowne St. I hope Barry Zito looks good but not too good. And I hope that even without me watching, the Sox get back on track.
