Man, you take off of a sunny Saturday afternoon for a clamboil and some highly competitive badminton, expecting the boys to have a firm handle on TWEMLBTPE, and of course Murphy's Law will dictate it will be a game of high drama.
Some commentary I've been catching up with today:
Surviving Grady: Number One.
Randy Booth at Over the Monster: Youk is obviously in Mash Mode.
Sox & Dawgs:John Smoltz may have to find a way to throw a complete game if tonight is any indication of the how the Boston Red Sox bullpen will be when he pitches.
Speaking of Sox & Dawgs, there's a followup on the topic of Eckersley / Orsillo / Bee Gees: Disco Denny.
Meanwhile, I've spent most of today feeling like I'd been teleported back to early 2008, as I spent much of this afternoon distracted from baseball by fallout from SpyGate (when I haven't been checking out the excellent New York Times Magazine piece on Tim Wakefield).
But here's to an All-Star Break kicked off by the Commander's second complete-game shutout of the season. In the fourth inning today the Royals were trying to eke out just one run with a bunt to move a runner from second to third, a desperation move to begin with, and then the Royals baserunner was caught on camera gesturing to Kevin Youkilis at third base when the next hitter failed to score him.
When members of your own team are commiserating with opponents about how bad your team sucks, well...you're definitely the kind of team Commander Kickass should be able to easily turn into hamburger. And that's exactly what he did for a dominating career win No. 100 today.
Also, congratulations to Aaron Bates for surviving the Beckett-Watney Incident and going on to record his first Major League hit today.
Finally, Dustin Pedroia will definitely be missed at the All-Star Game (especially since I was hoping to see him get into the Home Run Derby), but if you find one person in RSN unsympathetic to his family situation, please direct me to them, so I can go Tonya Harding on their kneecaps.
