The Sox just about almost thought about commencing to come back in the ninth, but it was too little, too late. Add Mike Lowell to the walking wounded, too. If he's even walking by tomorrow. I hope the Sox are watching a lot of video of the 2003 Patriots for inspiration--injuries are starting to mount to a similar level as that team.
Generally, though, as the trade deadline has passed without big moves and without Theo saying, as someone somewhere put it earlier (and I'm sorry, I've searched far and wide but can't find where I originally read this--please somebody jog my memory if you know where it came from. I'm also paraphrasing so I'd appreciate being able to put up the original quote.), "Hey, I've got an idea! Let's trade several components of the pitching future of our ballclub for one overrated slugger!" And you can look at it like this: every one of the humiliating losses we're taking right now? Could mean one more win in 2007 and 2008. At least, that's how I'm looking at it.
Meanwhile, this game here was pretty much upstaged by a wounded crow that found its way to the basepaths and took several daring leads off second base in the late innings, even mounting hopping steal attempts toward third at several points. I swear I am not making this up. If you missed this game, you missed a Sox loss, but you also missed some priceless play-by-play on the part of Don and Jerry about the crow's baserunning technique.
P.S. It should also be noticed that this tremendous post on Joy of Sox was referenced by Gordon Edes on NESN's pregame show tonight. A proud day of enhanced credibility for bloggers everywhere. Kudos to Edes for revealing his source, too--and giving credit where credit was due, even if it was to a "late-night fanboy" as the CHB likes to refer to bloggers.

thanks for the news, beth. i emailed the post to edes, but had no idea if he'd use it!
