Kansas City sends relief to Boston in the form of their baseball team

Okay, Boston, Massachusetts has been saying to itself today. The construction project that has cost us taxpayers $15 billion and lasted three times as long as it should already is falling down; the traffic around here lately would probably only be slightly worse if a 10-kiloton bomb were dropped in the middle of the city and everyone had to get out all at once; you have to take out a loan to fill up your gas tank; it's 101 degrees outside with 70% humidity; and World War III may be starting in the Middle East.

But, Boston has said to itself--all around my office as people groaned under the stress of it all I could feel this thought from the cubicles with their pictures of David Ortiz and Jason Varitek on the wall--Kansas City's in town for a three-game set starting tonight. At least there's something we can feel good about."

Folks, if you're wondering why Fenway Park reacted to a come-from-behind win against the Kansas City Royals like a postseason win against the Yankees, that's why. This is a seriously stressed out city right now. I personally believe that Dougie's Stud Bomb saved possibly as many as two workplaces from shootings tomorrow, and at least a half dozen road rage deaths (and all credit goes to the anonymous heroes who appeared on the pre-game show tonight behind the Rem Dawg with a banner that read DOUGIE'S GOING DEEP. Anyone who comes forward with any information as to the identity of these people, or a screencap, will have my undying gratitude).

We lost Wake to injury in the fourth, and his health is still uncertain. An absence of any length on the part of another member of our starting rotation is sure to be devastating, and if it were any other day, I might also be grousing here about having to play such a shoddy team so close.

But as it was, for a moment in the bottom of the eighth when David Ortiz clumsily stole second and Manny and Youk stood on the top of the dugout steps pointing and laughing, Boston got to crack a tired smile. It was a desperately needed win for the Nation as well as the team, and a win like that is wonderful, no matter how it happens.

P.S. That Will Ferrell ceremonial first pitch was some funny shit, wasn't it?

o dear god I HATE Will Ferrell. Sir, you are no El Tiante.

I felt somewhat vindicated in my loathing by how unfunny he was in the booth.

i personally happen to love will ferrell. now we will have to fight with knives.

Check out the link and then tell me if you still love him. Sir, you are no Ignatius J. Reilly either.

admittedly, his movies have sucked ass. however, he has been and always will be a genius of SNL. i still grieve for his george w. bush impression. and i just generally find him funny. i can't help it any more than you can help not liking him, ya know? he just cracks me up. i thought the tiant thing was hysterical, because of the deadpan way he did it and how well he had the mannerisms down. it's also not often someone puts that much thought and effort into throwing out a ceremonial first pitch.

the thing about will ferrell that's weird is that he strikes me as a very humorless person in general. like, he's good at being funny, but that's his work. he has to think about it. he strikes me as being kind of a prick otherwise. but when he's working i definitely go for his deadpan style of humor.

to each his own.

THE TRUE IDENTITY OF THE ANONYMOUS HEROES FROM THE NIGHT OF DOUG MIRABELLI'S GAME-TYING BOMB:

Haha not even kidding, my friends and I made that sign in my driveway. Last night we were trying to find any videos online of us at the game, cause NESN didn't show us...aside from the pre-game show. My friend came across this site. Haha so far it's the only place we've found any recognition for our epic sign. Here's a picture of the sign in my garage before it was complete, and then 1 outside by the pregame show, and another in fenway:
